Boldt’s Innovative COVID-19 inspired STAAT Mod Critical Care Units Gets Noticed by Awards Groups

October 13th, 2020 | by NEWCA

In April, The Build Out told you about Boldt’s innovative, solution-minded thinking that led to the creation of their STAAT Mod critical care units in the story, “Necessity the Mother of Invention…Again; Boldt Construction Adapts Modular Construction Know-How to Answer Hospital Needs.”

According to Boldt, the units were “developed in the early stages of the pandemic to address the safety of patients and healthcare workers affected by COVID-19. The company partnered with HGA Architects to design a modular, highly engineered solution for quickly building and deploying ICU units nationwide. The system went from concept to creation in two months and is currently being used at several hospital systems on the east coast.”

Now comes the news that the prefabricated ICU rooms created to treat COVID-19 patients have the caught the attention of at least two award competitions.

The Boldt Company announced earlier this week that modular medical units were recognized in Fast Company’s innovation by the Design Awards for 2020 in the Health and Spaces & Places categories. Published in the October/November 2020 issue of Fast Company, the Innovation by Design award is “the only competition to honor creative work at the intersection of design, business, and innovation,” according to a release from Boldt.

In September, the critical care units were nominated in the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) annual “Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin” competition where it competed with 150 other state companies.

The STAAT Mod’s are an example of industrialized construction, which are construction products built off-site, in a manufacturing-like environment.

Dave Kievet, president and COO of Boldt, explained in the release, “Building in a controlled environment allows us to set and achieve aggressive production schedules that improve quality for the end user and maintain safety for our team members. By standardizing the process, we can increase speed to market and help save lives.”

Congratulations to the entire Boldt and HGA teams for these well-deserved recognitions and for the amazing and timely innovative product they have produced.
