Congratulations to Alliance Founding Member Consolidated Construction Co., Inc., for Taking the Gold Projects of Distinction Award from ABC WI

December 8th, 2020 | by NEWCA

Consolidated Construction Co., Inc.,—a full service design/build firm in Appleton, WI and a founding member of the NEW Construction Alliance—has been recognized for producing one of Wisconsin’s most impressive and unique construction projects of 2020. That’s impressive no matter the year, but given the roller coaster-like nature of 2020, it is particularly impressive.

Congratulations to John Schneider and the entire team at Consolidated Construction Co., Inc.!

The Milwaukee-based Midwest Refrigerated Services Target Building Adaptive Project received a gold Projects of Distinction Award from the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin for excellence in construction.

A serious of circumstances, including rising crime, disinvestment by large retailers and the growth of the norther suburbs led to an economic decline on the northwest side of Milwaukee in the early 2000s. As a result, Target closed and abandoned a large store in 2016.

Consolidated’s project team took the unique approach of renovating the vacant store of nearly 123,000 square-feet into a mixed used space that combined a cold storage warehouse, distribution center, loading docks, office spaces, workstations, lounges, training facilities and a fulfillment center. Typically, separate structures would be built for the cold storage and the conditioned spaces.

But working hand-in-hand with MRS, Consolidated’s design-build team was able to see beyond the former Target store’s original configuration and create a plan that met the owner’s specific needs in one facility.

The new facility was even featured in a recent article in the Milwaukee Biz Times.

Projects receiving this award are “judged in a rigorous process by a panel of construction experts based on a number of criteria, including safety, quality, owner satisfaction, project execution and coordination, budgeting, difficult and unusual challenges, and overall distinctiveness,” according to a release announcing the news.

John Mielke, ABC WI president, stated: “ABC members do amazing work for clients in areas like manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, and education. We appreciate when our members are willing to have independent, third-party judges evaluate their work, so we have the opportunity to recognize their professional construction services that stand among the best anywhere.”
